Loki's Wives: Angrboda and Sigyn by MademoiselleMeg Loki's Wives: Angrboda and Sigyn by MademoiselleMeg
...aka, Loki's wives.

In Norse mythology Loki (the object of my fascination of late) had two wives---Angrboda, the Frost Giantess, and the maiden Sigyn. Strap in, peeps, this is gonna get LOOONG.

I took some ideas from the film Thor (ie, what the hell a Frost Giant should look like) and this is what I came up with.

Angrboda:</u>
Loki’s badass Frost Giant wife. Not much is said about her except that she is ‘fearsome’. So when I drew her, I was thinking full-on Celtic warrior queen. (My main fear was that she’d come out looking like a Na’avi!)

The short hairdo is a nod to my favorite action heroine of all time, Selene from Underworld. I’m still not satisfied with the armor design. I wanted it to look like she’d pieced together her own armor from stuff she’d found (possibly from vanquished Asgardian soldiers from long ago), since Jotunheim doesn’t exactly look like THE place to go for in-style armor (like Thor’s, Odin’s, or Loki’s, for example).

I mean, it looks pieced together, but I’ll probably give this another go with a different type of outfit.

Sigyn (or Sigrun, Sigruna, etc.)</u>

Loki’s other wife. While I’m not sure that Angrboda appears in the Thor comics, I think Sigyn does. (I only read a little bit, but I didn’t like the way her design was done or the character was written, so I went back to the original legend and worked from there).

Sigyn’s story never really says how she and Loki wound up together. In some of the legends, she was a Valkyrie at one point or another. She’s said to be very loyal and faithful, choosing to stay with an imprisoned Loki until the end of the world.

So when I went to draw Sigyn, I was thinking mostly of Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones. Someone ladylike, courteous, and accommodating—but also possessed of a sharp mind all her own and a steely inner strength. While I don’t picture Sigyn as a warrior, I don’t think that one necessarily needs a sword in their hand to be brave or strong.

Sigyn’s aqua-blue eyes are a nod to Sophie Turner’s eyes, who plays Sansa on the show—they can either be innocent and lovely, or sparked with fury or steely resolve. The character could be read as weak, but only to someone who’s really not paying attention. Because Sansa’s awesome. But I digress.

I associate that pale blond hair with very young children (notice that it’s mostly kids who have that really pale blond hair naturally), and innocence. But because I didn’t want her coming off as too innocent, I refrained from giving her a pink dress. Instead, I opted for a soft peach and gold dress, with a bronze armband.

Any thoughts and/or feedback would be appreciated, as always.

According to at least one version of the legend, the whole thing with Sigyn was an arranged marriage to further establish his position in Asgard after becomming blood brothers with Odin; Results kinda vary but she wound up being pretty loyal to him regardless, as evidenced by the whole "staying with him in his captivity" story, so I guess there's a lot of potential for interesting dynamics here.

I kind of like the contrast between Angrboda having been a being rather like Loki himself and a powerful witch to boot (with a whole load of this theme of being doomed by destiny that's generally strong in a lot of ancient stories), and Sigyn who seems to have an opposites-attract effect going on. There's just something incredibly poetic about a masterful liar/trickster finding himself with a previously somewhat underappreciated, but loyal and devoted wife as his only comfort.

If you're interested in some stories about Loki, Angrboda, and Sigyn that are written by people who worship them and work with them as Gods, you could check out the stories here:

[link]

including how he met both Angrboda and Sigyn. According to the various writers, this is what they were told in trance by the Gods themselves. However you feel about that, you might like them.

Also, there are online shrines to both Sigyn and Angrboda:

and you can light a virtual candle for them.

....I make the most silliest of jokes with these two and Loki. I can just imagine them having a cat-fight over him. XD lol! And Loki says something stupid (like 'why not just have a three-some?') and those two just glare at him, killing his dreams on the spot. :icondamnitplz: XD And then later, (muuuuuuuuuuuch later...) they start getting along and surprise attack Loki....where they have a grand time with him. :iconhurrplz:
I like your design of Angrboda, she looks cool thought I imagined her a bit buffer....but, eh, that's just me. And hurray, Sigyn looks positively lovely!

LOL! Glad to know I'm not the only one who imagines silly little vignettes about Loki and his unusual family. :)

The myths don't say, of course, but I'm SURE Loki tried to talk the girls into a threesome at some point. (Sigyn: "NO WAY. Angrboda has cold hands!") Of course, Loki *can* be very persuasive, so who knows, lol. (Mental picture of the girls surprising him and him looking up and mentally thanking every single god in Asgard for this miracle. Even Volstagg.)

This could backfire for him, as they'll become BFFs and get together for coffee and talk about all the annoying stuff he does.

So glad you like the designs! I'm still working on Angrboda and her outfit. Very happy with how Sigyn turned out, though, so I'm ECSTATIC that you like her too! WHEEeeeeeEEEE EGOBOOST. :D

Yes, and then I can so imagine how shocked and pissed off they'd be when they find out about him 'mothering' Sleipner (Odin's eight-legged horse) xD lol! Loki...u sleeping on the couch now! No sexy times for u! lol!

Hah, cold hands. Of course, Angrboda would then reply "She's a prissy little thing! I'd doubt she'll make it one night without being crushed!" Ooooooh! Ensue cat-fight!

Hi! Just stopping by to tell you lovely art and that Loki actually had three wives: the third is Glut and she's a Fire Giant, I believe. But she's even more obscure than Sigyn. :(

Anyway, maybe this link will be of use if you're still looking for stuff about Sigyn?

Sigyn is featured in the comics, I found. From what I learned, she's generally lacking a personality -- all she has, really, is her complete and utter devotion for Loki. The story behind them there is that she was betrothed to a man named Theoric, and at the same time, Loki wanted her, but she turned him down. So he arranged to have Theoric murdered and took his place during the wedding ceremony (in magical disguise), then revealed himself at the end. This pissed off Odin to no end, but Sigyn observed that she was married now, and by law of duty, she would honor her husband. This is what caused Odin to make her the Goddess of Fidelity.

If you're interested in a picture collage series about them that actually has feeling and plot, I suggest you go here [link] and just keep clicking the "next" button. ;) Unless you've seen these already, of course. :P

I've tried doing research into Sigyn (personal interest kinda thing) but there's very little to find, ya know? So I'm just gonna share this knowledge and move on. Toodle-oo.

Cool! I'm trying to work on a design for Angrboda myself, and it really is hard not to make her look like a Na'vi! You did a really good job on both of them, I love Sigyn's long flowy hair.

Thanks for the comment! Oddly I didn't even see the whole N'avi issue until I started coloring. Then it was like, "OH NO THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING MUST AVOID MUST AVOID" I think it worked in the end; I just kept her hair and costume as non-N'avi as I could. (I'm still not happy with Angrboda's outfit.) I'd love to see your version of her, though! She's not depicted very often (that I can tell).

Hee, yeah, I figured one of Loki's wives needed to have the long long princess hair. Angrboda can't fight with that stuff in her face, so Sigyn got stuck with it. She doesn't seem to mind, though. ;)
